December Challenge Day 6

Loooonnnnggggg day today.

1. Something I learnt: A bad situation is mostly never caused by one person or action. It is more likely a combination of lots of small actions that leads to a disaster. The only way back, is lots of small steps in the right direction.

2. Something I am grateful for: This blog! I am really enjoying the journey it is taking me on. Making myself sit down and write every day is so far surprisingly easy and a great way to make myself fully aware of how I am feeling.

3. Something I want to improve: My brain is completely fried tonight. I really need to improve balance in my week. Yesterday I did very little and accomplished not much. Today, I coached two sessions of swimming, worked an 8 hour day, baked for the school party tomorrow and tried (not very well) to be a parent. No wonder I am exhausted. I need a bit of yesterday in today and a bit of today in yesterday!!

December Challenge Day 5

Today was a bit of a weird one. It was a day I was determined to ‘get things done’ but for some reason got very little done. Frustrating!

  1. Something I learnt today: It is International Volunteer Day! I never knew it existed, although these days there seems to be a ‘day’ for everything! After my blog yesterday it felt exactly right that it should be volunteer day today. So, thank you to all those tireless volunteers I have around me and that touch my life. You are all very special and I hope you too enjoy the sense of achievement, pride and belonging that I do when I give my time to worthy causes.
  2. Something I am grateful for: Good friends. I feel lucky that I have friends around me that I can bounce things off and share the way I am feeling. Being able to talk to someone really is the best medicine. You know who you are!!
  3. Something I want to improve: My ability to give and receive compliments. I really suck at this. If someone says ‘I like that dress on you’ I would say ‘I got it from Kmart’ (or wherever). What I should say is ‘Thank you’. It doesn’t really matter where it came from, whether it was cheap or expensive. Their point is, it looks nice. I have a friend who always compliments. I love that about her. It lifts me up and most likely lifts her up when she gives them. I am going to try to do this more often.

December Challenge Day 4

Interesting day.

1. Something I learnt today: Not all is what it seems. Talking to the right people and taking the time to listen to background information and different points of view can change your mind on a person or situation. Instead of assuming the worst, we all need to learn to listen to the reasoning.

2. Something I am grateful for: My daughter’s infectious laugh. After a tough day of politics, I came home and could hear her laughing from the driveway, it put the biggest smile on my face. Turns out she was asking Siri to spell ‘supercalafradulisticexpia……’ (you know what I mean). Try it, it is pretty funny!

3. Something I want to change: I wish we all had more time to be understanding and helpful to one another. Life is lived at such a fast pace these days, people just don’t feel they have time to invest in volunteer roles or organisations. I wish I could make more people see, that giving a little can result in you gaining so many rewards, not in a physical or material sense, but in one of achievement, pride and belonging.

December Challenge Day 2

Wow what an amazing day!!

  1. What I learnt today: I am actually not that bad at running (in very short distances)!! Turns out our transition time from swim to run in the Ironman was totally respectable. I am not saying it was good, just not too bad. I may not be able to walk for the next 2 weeks, but at least I looked the part today, so who cares!
  2. What I am grateful for: Swimming. A sport I have been involved in all my life, that has shown me all kinds of highs and lows, opened so many doors and given me life experiences I will never forget. There has been training, competing, coaching, travelling, blood, sweat and tears. Today, it again allowed me to be a part of an Ironman event. These events are an amazing experience and one that offers so much inspiration. Today, I saw people stand up after moments of heartache and despair, recover from gut wrenching mechanical problems and continue through the pain barrier to complete an event that is so gruelling. My own team suffered a horrible misfortune with a breakage on the bike, yet we came back and took out 3rd place, from tears to big smiles.
  3. Something I would like to improve: My little competitive streak, it isn’t really necessary. My husband and his team also had an amazing day, improving their time since they last competed in May. It really doesn’t matter that my team beat his……….. does it?!!! ;>) (Whoops I did it again!). Because they beat themselves and that is a huge win (I love you husband – well done on your significant PB).

December challenge Day 1

My challenge to blog every day of December starts today. Hopefully somewhere on this journey I will find inspiration for my new blog name!

1. Something I have learnt today: The December Ironman event is quite different to the May one! Seems the team swimmer should also be able to run.

2. Something I am grateful for: the family excitement on Day 1 of Christmas celebrations. From the Elf on the Shelf’s arrival, to putting up the Christmas tree, it is smiles all around.

3. Something I would like to improve: my running ability (although that would require a few spare parts!). Tomorrow morning is going to hurt!!
