Celebrate our differences

The last few days have brought home to me how different we all are. This might seem obvious, but often we get caught up in the notion we should be doing certain things or should be feeling a certain way. We put pressure on ourselves if we feel differently.

I read a great article this morning about how the media is telling us we all need to slow down and do less to avoid stress. It was a relief to see the author Danielle Miller acknowledging this is not the case for some people.

Some of us need to be busy, for example too much idle time is bad news for me. My brain left without a specific task or goal runs wild with over analysing scenarios, criticising my actions and generally destructive thoughts. So I avoid too much idle time. I am only now beginning to work out a balance between busy and the down time I need to replenish my batteries, without tipping over into too much downtime. I just need to listen to myself.

So…… in essence some people need to slow down, but others don’t, being busy works for them. They are DIFFERENT!

Today is Sunday. Family Day. But today our family could not agree on something all four of us wanted to do. I insisted today is family day, we must all be together. Everybody got distressed.

So I listened to the voices.

We split into pairs and spent 4 hours apart doing completely different activities. We all had a great time. We had the opportunity to connect one on one, something relatively rare and we enjoyed an activity we felt like doing. We are DIFFERENT!

It is ok to be different. It is ok not to do what is expected. It is ok to listen to ourselves and what we want.

Same but different.
